Mayotte is an overseas department of France. The archipelago is located in the northern Mozambique Channel in the Indian Ocean, namely between northwestern Madagascar and northeastern Mozambique. Area - 376 sq.km. Population - 252 000 (2010) Capital (Prefecture) - Mamoudzou. In 1500, the Maore or Mawuti sultanate was established on the island. Mayotte was ceded to France in 1841. It was the only island in the archipelago that voted in referendums in 1974 and 1976 to retain its link with France and forgo independence. The Comoros continue to claim the island. Mayotte became an overseas department of France in March 2011 in consequence of a 29 March 2009 referendum. Currency : 1 Euro = 100 cents.
